What We Have and What’s Expected for the Week of July 13th

One of the many reasons to buy local produce is the lower risk of contamination from food-borne pathogens. And with cyclospora outbreaks in the news right now, local berries, salad greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and other fruits and veggies that are consumed raw are especially appealing compared to the conventional grocery store alternatives, aren’t they?
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, which spreads when people consume food or water contaminated with feces, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Of course, local farms are not automatically immune to Cyclospora or any pathogens, but shorter supply chains generally offer fewer opportunities for contamination. And we know that the farmers we work with take all appropriate precautions when growing, irrigating and harvesting their fruits and veggies. None of these farms have issues with contaminated irrigation water, either!
All that said, we have a fairly normal week on deck for incoming deliveries from our farmers and producers, although we do expect figs and blueberries to officially wind down for the season.
Peaches and Valencia oranges are still going strong and we may see some more melons, too.
There’s also mixed heirloom cherry tomatoes and San Marzano tomatoes, limited microgreens (more coming on Friday), lots of gourmet mushrooms, plus Armenian cucumbers, Japanese eggplant, zephyr squash, fingerling potatoes, radishes, beets, peppers and more.
We expect yellow Roma and yellow beefsteak tomatoes to come in on Tuesday and we’ll also restock okra, more peppers, carrots, kohlrabi and red cabbage on Tuesday, too. Salad greens from Homegrown in Folsom will be back on Thursday!
We restocked some beef and pork on Friday from our backup freezer and we’ll get even more on Wednesday when I pick up the next round of pork from the butcher (that should include cuts we’ve been out of like tenderloin, pork chops, baby back ribs, Boston butt and picnic shoulder roasts, Italian sausage links and more!).
Chicken is stocked up except for boneless breasts and we’ll get more of those on Wednesday afternoon, as well. There’s also goat meat and lots of Gulf seafood.
There’s more milk, chocolate milk and creole cream cheese coming from Feliciana’s Best Creamery on Tuesday, but last we heard, their cream separator is still down, so we don’t expect more heavy cream or half & half until at least next week.
We’re starting the week with a good amount of goat milk and various cheeses and we’ll restock more on Wednesday as usual.
Plus there’s lots of pantry staples like GraNOLA and bars, glazed pecans, pecan butter, honey and maple syrup, elderberry syrups and juices, herbal teas and tinctures, seasonings, hot sauces, rice, grits, stone-milled flour and more. There’s sea salt watermelon kombucha and we except more from La Rive on Wednesday and more from Gingerbooch on Friday or Saturday.
