Tours & Classes
We are excited to finally begin regular educational farm tours that are open to the public this year!
We had a great time at our April tours and have some more on deck in November. This time we have some conflicts on a few Saturdays, so giving two Sunday tours a try, as well.
Tours are 1-4 pm on Saturday, November 8th, Sunday, November 16th and Sunday, November 23rd.
Child tickets (ages 2-12) are $10, children 13+ and adult tickets are $25 and babies under 2 come along free.
We aimed for two hours last time, but realistically with all the ground (literal and figurative) to cover and very engaged groups with lots of questions, we went closer to 4 pm on all of them.
During these walking tours, we go over our practices in rotationally grazing beef cattle and meat goats, rotating laying hens on pasture and our farrow-to-finish hog program.
We also touch on our soil, compost and vermicompost program and methods for rebuilding top soil, enhancing biodiversity creating silvopasture and eliminating certain invasive species while producing food at the same time.
While we'd love for you to be able to pet our animals, they are livestock rather than pets and are not used to or comfortable with large groups of people. So unfortunately, there's no guarantees you'll be able to pet them, get the exact close-up selfie you'd like or pick up baby goats and definitely not piglets (the momma sows freak out!).
The tour is a walking tour, roughly .75-1 mile of walking, with standing in between.
At this time, the farm tour content is geared towards adults. Children have come on previous tours and seemed to enjoy seeing the animals, but we want to properly manage expectations that petting and feeding animals isn't part of the tour and the details on soil health and grazing may be boring to some kids! Recommended age is 8 and up, but you know your children best!
Tours must be booked in advance and are not refundable, but can be rescheduled to a later tour date.
Tours are rain or shine but will be rescheduled for inclement/dangerous weather.
Plan to wear walking shoes, pants (while we’ll mostly stay on the internal gravel roads, there will be treks into the pasture with potential fire ants, brambles, etc), bring hats, sunscreen and water bottles.
There is a separate “item” for each tour in our online shopping cart. Note that the "Fulfillment Date" and "Fulfillment Location" are not relevant to the tour date, it's just required per our online store front for physical items we sell.
So you can select Metairie store pick up, add tour reservations to grocery orders, or even just select "Bogalusa Farm Pick Up," with the corresponding tour date if you wish.
