November Tours at Local Cooling Farms
Back when we wrapped up our inaugural farm tours in April, the fall seemed so far away. But some how we’ve made it through another long, hot summer and — knock on wood — are nearly through with another hurricane season, too!
We thought about trying some evening farm tours in the summer to avoid the heat and meant to schedule October tours, but things kept coming up and Grant and I both have/had some separate October travels and other conflicts.
So for our fall tours we’re doing just one Saturday tour on November 8th and trying out two Sunday tours as well, on November 16th and November 23rd. The latter tour will run into the Saints game, but you can still catch the second half!
This time we are offering a child priced ticket ($10 for kids aged 2-12, under 2 free), but the caveat remains that the content is adult focused.
Children did attend the April tours and seemed to enjoy, but we still really want to manage expectations that as a working farm, there’s no guarantee they can pet or feed the animals or even that the livestock will corporate in coming near the group when we pass by!
We also use electric fences for all perimeter and temporary fences for rotational grazing.
We didn’t breed for fall goat kids, so there won’t be any tiny kids for these tours; the youngest kids will be six months old by then!
There are two litters of piglets that will be about a month old by then and possibly a third litter will be born before then, too. This time we will still have some pigs rotating in the woods — in April we had just taken our feeder pigs to harvest and it was just the breeders and the baby piglets on the farm.
The cattle herd will be fairly small as we’re planning to harvest some beef in the next few weeks, but there will be more chickens than ever in our three pasture coops, in the brooders and in the hoophouse.
