Goats Available: Spring-Born Doelings

I say this every time we have goats for sale — I wish we could keep them all! Really, I do!

We also don’t have a breeding herd of cattle and cattle prices remain so high, so there is the temptation to rely on a larger herd of goats to be our main ruminants/grazers/pasture maintenance crew right now. But then again, we just bred 40 does for February kids, so I that’s probably plenty!

Therefore, we now have several lovely doelings that were born between January 31 and March 25 for sale. We will likely add a few born between May 11th and May 29th, as well, but there are some standouts in that group for sure, I can’t decide who we’ll keep!

About Our Herd:

We started our herd in October 2016 with 16 does bought from another farm. About half were Boer-Kiko crosses and were bred to a Myotonic buck. The other half were triple crosses of those three breeds.

We bred to a pure Myotonic buck for two seasons, bred triple cross bucks the next season, then brought in pure Kiko bucks for the following four seasons and have bred to triple crosses the past two seasons.

All of these does are descended from 8 of our original does, including one we added later in 2018 who is a Saanen Oberhasli cross.

We do not vaccinate or do any prophylactic worming or use any pharmaceuticals on the doe kids (we do vaccinate buckling for tetanus when banding).

Instead, we have aimed to cull for traits we don’t like (like limited natural parasite resistance or other health problems, low milk supply or rejecting kids). This has resulted in a hardy herd full of great mothers. As meat breeds, they have plenty of milk to feed their kids, but not much beyond that for regular milking. Over supply in meat breeds can be an issue that can lead to mastitis sometimes and we have culled does with problems with this.

Our other parasite and disease prevention involves rotational grazing and making sure to rest the land properly between rotations to break the larvae hatch cycle. We also give a high quality kelp-based mineral.

We also supplement with local gras hay, alfalfa pellets and soy hull (in winter, not currently), but do need feed grain. These does have been exposed to high tensile electric fence, electric net fence and electric poly wire since birth.

These doelings have been fully weaned and are currently separated from their mothers while their mothers are with the herd sires, being bred for February kids. We will be pulling the bucks and combining the whole herd back together soon though.

Note that many of these does are the first kids of their yearling mothers, which is why there are more singles than from our November kidding group that included most of our older “varsity” squad does.

Price is $225 per doe. Call or text Grant at 504-234-3564 with questions and to arrange pick up.
